What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology where eggs are fertilised by sperm outside the body in a laboratory. The resulting embryo is then transferred to the uterus. IVF is one of the most effective fertility treatments available today.

Who Needs IVF?

IVF is recommended for couples dealing with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, severe male infertility, unexplained infertility after 2+ years of trying, PCOS not responding to other treatments, endometriosis, or recurrent pregnancy loss.

The IVF Process: Step by Step

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Evaluation

Your journey begins with blood hormone tests (FSH, LH, AMH, estradiol), antral follicle count via ultrasound, semen analysis, uterine evaluation, and review of medical history. This creates your personalised IVF protocol.

Step 2: Ovarian Stimulation (10-14 days)

Self-administered injectable hormones stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Daily ultrasound monitoring tracks follicle growth. The goal is 8-15 mature eggs for best success rates.

Step 3: Egg Retrieval

A minor surgical procedure done under light sedation. A thin needle guided by ultrasound retrieves eggs from follicles in 20-30 minutes. Most patients go home the same day.

Step 4: Fertilisation in the Lab

Retrieved eggs are fertilised using conventional IVF or ICSI (injecting a single sperm directly into the egg). Embryos are cultured for 3-5 days.

Step 5: Embryo Transfer

On Day 3 or Day 5 (blastocyst stage), the best quality embryo is transferred into the uterus using a thin catheter. This is painless and requires no anaesthesia. Remaining good embryos are frozen for future use.

Step 6: Pregnancy Test

A blood beta-hCG test 14 days after transfer confirms pregnancy. If successful, you graduate to obstetric care at 8-10 weeks.

IVF Success Rates in India

India has some of the highest IVF success rates in Asia. Per cycle: women under 35 achieve 50-60%, women 35-37 achieve 40-50%, women 38-40 achieve 30-40%, and women over 40 achieve 15-25%. Success depends on age, egg quality, sperm quality, clinic expertise, and number of embryos transferred.

IVF Cost in India

IVF in India is 60-80% more affordable than in the USA, UK, or Australia. A standard IVF cycle costs Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 1,50,000. With ICSI it ranges from Rs 1,20,000 to Rs 1,80,000. Donor egg IVF costs Rs 1,50,000 to Rs 2,50,000. These costs typically include stimulation medications, monitoring, egg retrieval, lab procedures, and embryo transfer.

Choosing the Right IVF Centre

Consider ICMR accreditation, published success rates, embryology lab quality with PGT and time-lapse incubators, number of IVF cycles performed annually, patient reviews and counselling support, and transparent pricing with no hidden costs.
